The forerunner of College of Computer Science and Technology (CST College)
was a teaching and research section, set up in Department One at the beginning
of 1970s. In 1985 the Department of Computer Engineering was founded by
combining Radio Engineering Department with Computer Center. It went on
to establish itself as CST College in combination with the National Key
Laboratory of Switching Technology and Telecommunication Networks.
CST College is the biggest one among the 13 colleges of Beijing University
of Posts and Telecommunications. Among more than 130 faculty members, one
is academician, six are tutors for doctorate students, twenty-three are
professors, thirty-four are associate professors. Especially, one professor
is engaged as Yangtze Honorary Professor. Two professors are winners of
Distinguished Young Scholars. Another two are winners of Trans-Century Talents
of Ministry of Education. Among the teachers younger than 45 years old,
48 percent of them have Doctor Degrees and 47percent have Master Degree.
Every year CST College recruits 400 college students, 200 graduate students,
30 doctorate students, 300 graduate students of engineering.

CST College has a complete system of majors and talent training program.
It offers Bachelor Degree of Computer Science and Technology, Master Degree
of Computer Application, Master degree of Computer Software and Doctor
Degree of Computer Application. The Software College of BUPT, set up by
CST College together with Information Engineering Department and Science
College, was ratified by the Ministry of Education in 2001 with its special
feature of the training of the engineers of communication software. The
Software College has become one of the 33 pilot colleges of the kind of
the country. The teachers of CST College publish about 200 papers every
year and the research funds reach about RMB 2,500,000 yuan every year.
The goal of CST College is to foster talents with the knowledge of both
computer and communication: experts in both computer communication and
communication software. Because the students graduating from CST College
can meet the demands of hot job fields in both communication and computer
science, there have been more job vacancies than the students available
in recent years. 95 percent of the students have been paid a very high
salary by well-known companies in the fields of computer and communication
technology both at home and abroad. CST College provides a good environment
for experiment and practice: Laboratory Center and other laboratories
of respective professor own one Tandem fault tolerant computer, 15 advanced
servers including IBM RS600 / 44 p-170, COMPAQ ALPHA SERVER 4100, SUN
E450 and etc, 30 SUN workstations, 500 micro-computers, two switching
systems (AXE10,S1240), all kinds of hardware systems, 90 interface experiment
instruments, the whole set of software engineering environment tools and
communication software developing platform for special use. Eleven 3 Com
programming control switching systems direct all computers of laboratory
centers through highway network local campus (direct CERNET) to ensure
the bandwidth to reach 100Mpbs, and make every computer reach the bandwidth
of more than 10Mpbs.
