BUPT Library was
established in 1955. Its main building was completed in 1986 with
a floor space of about 13,000 square meters. The library contains
about one million books of different kinds and periodicals of more
than 3,000 kinds dominated by those on posts, telecommunications &
electronics. It has a relatively complete collection of world-famous
books & periodicals on telecommunications, which can be rated
as the first class in China. Besides the books & periodicals in
printing types, it has collected a great number of electronic data
bases of writings, covering the full texts from IEE Explore, EI Village,
ITU, INSPEC, the data base of Chinese periodicals, the academic periodicals
of China and the data base of summaries. Its collection has increased
at a rate of 30,000 books and periodicals a year. The overall management
& service by computers has been realized in BUPT Library.
The Modern
Electronic Library Information Network System (MELINETS), developed
by BUPT Library independently, has brought about the integrated
management of library affairs such as acquisition, cataloging, circulation
and public retrieval service. Additionally, it has also realized
the on-line cataloging, inter-loaning books between libraries, remote
retrieval service and the automatic office management of personnel
& facilities. MELINETS has been authenticated by the experts
concerned as a leader one at home & an advanced one abroad on
the technological level. It has won the Second-Class Award for the
Progress of Science & Technology by the Municipal Government
of Beijing. This research achievement has been transformed into
new commodities of advanced technology and has found wide applications
in various libraries.
BUPT Library has built up a wide co-operational relationship with
those of other universities of Beijing & all parts of the country.
Both The Secretariat of the Library & Information Working Committee
of China's Universities of Posts & Telecommunications and the
Secretariat of the Automation Research Association of University
Libraries of Beijing are stationed in BUPT Library and work here.
